Best Public-Facing Explainers

Hands-on technical learning for more people

Found and Feral is a proposed rural maker and STEM-access initiative. It imagines supervised spaces and classes where people can learn electronics, repair, coding, communications, sensors, and resilient systems without needing expensive personal equipment or prior professional access.

It is a proposed public-benefit concept, not an already recognized tax-exempt charity. Future programs will require appropriate legal structure, safeguarding, governance, and venue approvals.

The vision

Found and Feral is imagined as the public-facing learning heart of a broader rural innovation effort. The program would help young people, adults, and overlooked communities explore electronics, coding, repair, responsible computing, sensors, connectivity, maker skills, and the practical technologies behind food and energy systems.

The problem worth solving

A person should not need an engineering job, expensive equipment, or access to a major university to understand how useful technology works. Safe, supervised access to tools and mentors can build confidence, creativity, and meaningful skills—particularly where formal resources are scarce.

Program and operating workstreams

  • The Tinker Lab: supervised electronics, repair, and hands-on making with accessibility and age-appropriate safeguards.
  • The Feral Pod: a proposed modular teaching or demonstration space rather than a currently operated laboratory.
  • The Silicon Pasture: practical sensor projects that make data visible and understandable.
  • The Mesh Orchard: responsible community communications and low-power radio demonstrations.
  • The Living Grid: accessible lessons in energy use, off-grid planning, measurement, and resilience.
  • Open learning resources: document beginner-friendly instructions, safe kits, and reusable curricula with clear licensing.
  • Measured community benefit: define participation, skill completion, equipment access, and local partner outcomes.

Business or funding model

A properly formed charitable organization might eventually pursue eligible grants, restricted sponsorships, gifts, equipment donations, and program support. Before that point, any pilot needs a lawful operator and honest payment terms. Neither the charity nor its tax-exempt status, board, budget, donor program, or independent facilities are currently established.

Development priorities

  • Choose the narrow first-year charitable purpose, eligible beneficiaries, and measurable educational outcomes.
  • Recruit qualified independent governance, safeguarding expertise, and appropriate insurance advice.
  • Determine whether to form a Mississippi nonprofit, use a permitted fiscal sponsor, or pilot through a separately contracted organization.
  • Design one small supervised workshop with accessible tools and safety documentation.
  • Publish transparent finances, permissions, donation terms, and results only after lawful launch.

Who we want to hear from

Educators, libraries, rural schools, makerspaces, technical mentors, equipment donors, accessibility experts, community groups, and organizations with established charitable infrastructure.

Important boundaries

This proposed initiative is separate from commercial cannabis operations. Its page is not a solicitation for tax-deductible contributions, and commercial customer purchases are not represented as charitable gifts. Any paid role in a future charity would require independent, lawful governance.
