Black Box Fields | Applied Field Technology

Build a practical field environment where rural agriculture meets environmental sensing, resilient systems, and hands-on engineering education.

Current status: Planning stage. A separate legal entity, site purchase/lease, operating permits, deployed campus, and signed institutional programs have not been established.

A real-world testbed for rural technology

Black Box Fields is planned as a place to test practical systems in the conditions they are meant to serve: environmental sensors, resilient communications, field data, agricultural automation, and supervised technical learning. The larger vision is a site where people can see how the technology works together.

The field campus is a proposal, not a completed installation. A portable pilot, legal site access, insurance, and safety planning are logical steps before any major buildout.

The vision

Black Box Fields is envisioned as an applied field laboratory and operating business with a clear physical grounding in Mississippi. Its proposed campus would combine agricultural systems, sensor networks, local computing, communications, mushroom or aquaponic demonstrations, energy resilience, and supervised training in one instrumented environment. Earlier planning referred to Black Box Farms; the final name and ownership remain to be settled.

The problem worth solving

Rural communities face real challenges in equipment affordability, connectivity, technical workforce access, environmental monitoring, and field operations. A correctly scoped demonstration site could allow products and curricula to be assessed under ordinary weather, power, and operator conditions rather than only under controlled marketing scenarios.

Program and operating workstreams

  • The Living Grid: evaluate energy monitoring, backup power, resource use, safety interlocks, and operational resilience.
  • Mesh Orchard: demonstrate lawful long-range radio and Meshtastic/LoRa communications for local data and field coordination.
  • Silicon Pasture: create hands-on sensing, robotics, automation, and environmental telemetry demonstrations.
  • Controlled-environment agriculture: assess aquaponics, hydroponics, water/energy measurement, and food production with verifiable economics.
  • Local AI and edge systems: explore on-site processing, private data workflows, anomaly detection, and assistive decision tools.
  • Field education: offer supervised, safety-first demonstrations in electronics, communications, instrumentation, and operations.
  • UAS safety research: consider lawful drone operations and risk-management education only with appropriate qualifications and permissions.

Business or funding model

Possible revenue could arise from paid field evaluations, equipment demonstrations, training contracts, technology installation services, facility rental, data-system design, or sponsored pilots. Each would require a documented service scope, facilities and insurance. The campus is not presented as operational and no third-party equipment, government contract, or land asset is claimed.

Development priorities

  • Finalize the project identity, legal entity plan, permitted activities, and separation from cannabis-related businesses.
  • Score candidate properties against utilities, zoning, access, environmental conditions, cost, and insurability.
  • Start with a portable sensor-and-communications testbed rather than committing to a full campus.
  • Secure qualified safety leads and written operating procedures before any public training.
  • Expand only after evidence of customer demand and equipment performance.

Who we want to hear from

Landowners, rural-development organizations, makers, agricultural technology companies, engineers, insurers, workforce educators, and equipment partners interested in an accountable field pilot.

Important boundaries

Black Box Fields is intended to maintain a strict operational, financial, legal, and brand boundary from cannabis commerce. It does not currently claim a defense, law-enforcement, government, or university contract, drone-security authorization, or accredited training status.
